St. John Brebeuf is a STREAM SCHOOL
Science, Technology Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math
STEM education as defined by the Ontario Ministry of Education is the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, including cross-curricular and/or integrative study, and the application of those subjects in real-world contexts. As students engage in STEM education, they develop transferable skills that they need to meet the demands of today’s global economy and society. Further, robotics and coding allow students to improve creative thinking skills, teamwork, problem solving skills, and get exposure to the basics of computer programming languages on several platforms in a fun, challenging and project based way.
At St. John Brebeuf in Erin the manner in which we see the world, seek knowledge and learn, are guided by faith. For that reason, we offer STREAM which includes both Arts and Religion.

Environmental Education
St. John Brebeuf Catholic School is located at 30 Millwood Street in the town of Erin, on property adjacent to the Woolen Mill Conservation Area. The Woolen Mill Trail offers 1.8 kms of trail that is frequently used by our staff and students for classes, nature hikes, habitat studies, environmental science, cross country running and orienteering. Access to the property is controlled via gated, keyed access from our schoolyard to the trails.
Environmental Stewardship
As Catholics, our social teaching calls us to a duty and obligation to care for God’s creation which has been entrusted to our care for a short time. In 2015, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, detailed this position in his papal encyclical, Laudato Si.
At St. John Brebeuf, we care for the environment every day we accept the challenge to see the beauty and wonder of God’s creation. We strive to treat one another with respect as children of God. We demonstrate gratitude for creation and the birds, trees, plants, streams and fresh air. As we accept our role as stewards in taking care of God’s creation and plan, we are doing his work by taking care of what has been entrusted to us.
“All of us can cooperate as instruments of God for the care of creation, each according to his or her own culture, experience, involvements and talents.” Pope Francis, Laudato Si.
Skills Canada Club
Skills Canada was founded in 1989 as a national, not-for-profit organization with partner Skills Canada organizations in each of the provinces/territories that work with employers, educators, labour groups and governments to promote skilled trade and technology careers among Canadian youth.
At St. John Brebeuf, Skills Club members in Grades 6, 7&8 learn about Construction Technology, Green Energy, Lego Robotics, Lego Mechanics, Health& Safety, Video and Design and Technology. All members learn about the design and engineering process and how to solve problems in a team- based environment.
Girls Who Code Club
THE GIRLS WHO CODE club at St. John Brebeuf is part of a wider worldwide network of computing programming and coding clubs that has at its core, three fundamental principles:
- Coding - learning the concepts of loops, variables, conditionals and functions that form the basis of all computer programming.
- Sisterhood - belonging to a group of Girls Who Code- provides a safe and supportive environment of peers and role models where girls learn to see themselves as computer scientists, programmers, coders and STEM learners.
- Impact - working in teams to complete a computer science project that solves a real world/community problem.
Coding and Robotics Club
Students in the Grade 7 and 8 cohort of classes are able to join the club that meets once per week in the computer hub. Students take part in coding and robotics lessons using platforms such as Scratch, Block, Python etc. We work with Spheros, Microbits, Lego Robotics, Lego Mechanics, Vex Robotics and K8 Inksmith /Microbits. Pictures above were taken last year’s training sessions.
