Posted on 06/18/2025

St. James Catholic High School received a very special handmade chess set this week. The set was crafted by Guelph-area veteran Jacques De Winter, with many pieces made out of reclaimed wood from St. James' old school benches.

Jacques is a former member of the Canadian Army who served in the United Nations Peacekeeping Force and is a current member of the Queen's Own Rifles Regiment. He holds a deep connection to St. James, having previously worked with students on restoration projects to honour fallen Canadian soldiers. His 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren are also graduates of the school.

Thank you Jacques for creating such a beautiful keepsake, the St. James community is honoured to receive this incredible gift!
